What's New in SQL Server 2017

SQL Server 2017 represents a major step toward making SQL Server a platform where you have different choices: Choose between different development languages and data types, between on-premises or cloud execution, and between different operating systems by bringing the power of SQL Server to Linux, Linux-based Docker containers, and Windows.

SQL Server 2017 Database Engine

SQL Server 2017 includes many new database engine features, enhancements, and performance improvements. The database engine is the core service for storing, processing, and securing data. The database engine provides controlled access and rapid transaction processing to meet the demands of even the most demanding data processing applications in your enterprise. Use the database engine to create relational databases for OLTP (Online Transactional Processing) or OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) data. This includes creating tables for data storage and database objects, such as indexes, views, and stored procedures, for viewing, managing, and securing data. Use SQL Server Management Studio to manage database objects and SQL Server Profiler to record server events.

Analysis Services

Analysis Services is an analytical data engine in Decision Support and Business Analytics, providing analytical data for business reports and client applications like Excel, Power BI, which are used by Reporting Services reports and other data visualization tools. A typical workflow involves creating a multidimensional/tabular data model and deploying the model as a database to a local SQL Server Analysis Service or Azure Analysis Service server instance. Similarly, recurring data processing can be set up and permissions to access data can be distributed to end-users. Once complete, your semantic data model can be claimed as a data source by all client applications supported by Analysis Services. Analysis Services is now available in the cloud as an Azure service. Azure Analysis Services supports tabular models with compatibility level 1200 or higher. DirectQuery, partitions, row-level security, bidirectional relationships, and translations are supported.

SQL Server Integration Services

Microsoft Integration Services is a platform for building enterprise-level data integration and data transformation solutions. You use Integration Services to solve complex business problems by copying or downloading files, sending email messages in response to events, updating data warehouses, cleansing data and data mining, and managing SQL Server objects and data. Packages can be used alone or in conjunction with other packages to meet complex business requirements. Integration Services can extract and transform data from a variety of sources, such as XML data files, flat files, and relational data sources, and then load the data into one or more destinations. Integration Services includes a variety of built-in tasks and transformations, tools for building packages, and the Integration Services service for running and managing packages. You can use the graphical Integration Services tools to create solutions without writing a single line of code. Or you can program the rich Integration Services object model to programmatically create packages and code custom tasks and other package objects.
